The cast of A Wrinkle
Who (Mindy Kaling, speaking only in quotes, from Shakespeare to Chris Tucker) are the children's guides. She's such a leader. She sees his return as the answer to all of her problems. She made a decision to fight for the young starlet to appear in the film instead of trying to find another lead. Teens may relate to her more. The story about an awkward 13-year-old girl, Meg Murry, who travels through time and space, was a notoriously unwieldy one that carried the dreaded "un-filmable" stigma.
Storm Reid stars as Meg, whose scientist father Jack (the remarkable Chris Pine) disappears. "But we wanted someone who could handle tell this story with such an emotional truth and make it so evocative and so cinematic". Storm Reid ("Sleight") turns out to be the best choice the director makes, offering the flawless mix of adolescent self-loathing and smarts as our reluctant hero, Meg.
I said it before: she's the real deal. But in the end, it was all worth it.
And while author Madeleine L'Engle's book was published in 1962, this story of middle schooler Meg Murry, her precocious little brother, Charles Wallace, and her friend and fellow outsider Calvin O'Keefe uniting to fight a most malevolent evil reminds some pop-culture watchers of the Parkland, Fla., students and their battle for gun control. DuVernay ("Selma", "13th"), who has imagined the book's central family as multiracial, brings her keen sense for acting talent to the film's casting, if also a weak eye for science-fiction and fantasy visuals.
The bottom-line: The nuanced, new age philosophy of "A Wrinkle in Time" offers up too much time and not enough wrinkles. Not only because DuVernay is the first African American woman to direct a film with a budget of $100 million, but the film comes less than a month after the Disney's blockbuster hit "Black Panther". It's not often that we see purely straightforward films that are simply about vanquishing darkness with the light from within us. While Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling appear to be enjoying themselves as the mystical god-like beings who help the protagonists, they mostly serve to give exposition and their screen time isn't as high as one might expect.
"We're showing the world that we are important and we can contribute to the greatness of the world", she says.
That being said, I've read a lot of articles in the past couple of weeks that have been patting Hollywood in its back, saying it's now diverse because of this movement. "That she could have been seen like this".
Oprah Winfrey's politically correct vehicle known as "A Wrinkle In Time" is getting less than a glowing reception by critics and viewers alike. Meg doesn't have any superpowers. What Oprah's done with her power is just.
And, most importantly, Meg is clearly the hero of the movie. "But they did. And when they said I could make her a girl of color, it just grabbed my whole heart". It isn't just wishful thinking, either. We're promised early in the film that the mom will factor into the story - a promise that goes undelivered.
If there is an extra-textual throughline to A Wrinkle in Time, it's embodied in elements like the camerawork: there are clear, active decisions occurring behind the lens here, in ways that are rarely evident in big-budget fare.
"I want [audiences] to feel empowered and inspired and like they can do anything they want to do", Reid says.
