Reverend Billy Graham's Legacy in Iowa
This week saw the passing of a renowned man of God, Billy Graham.
In 1957, he said, "I intend to go anywhere, sponsored by anybody, to preach the Gospel of Christ".
Known as the "Billy Graham Rule", the advice was in line with cultural and sexual norms of the 1950s and later decades, when many of Graham's contemporary evangelical preachers fell from grace after widely publicized extramarital affairs, said R. Marie Griffith, director of the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics at Washington University in St. Louis. It was shocking and those were words spoken that I will always remember.
The Rev. Billy Graham's body will be brought to his hometown of Charlotte on Saturday as part of a procession expected to draw crowds of well-wishers. "And I miss him". Graham had an especially close - and complicated - relationship with Richard Nixon. I believe it's going to be something beyond anything that we could imagine.
But his legacy lives on in many ways, through outlets old and new and through people like Wallace. That night, the same Spirit lit the match of new life in my heart.
Time will tell - and across time Graham will not be forgotten as a man appealing to people from many denominations, faiths, ethnicities, and from this country and around the world. "Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers" (1 Tim. 4:16). We felt this was symbolic since he stood behind a pulpit most of his life preaching the Gospel.
DeMoss said Graham spent his final months in and out of consciousness. He then placed his full weight onto the Bible whenever he preached and taught.
However, Graham already had learned how he could inadvertently get in the way of that message.
Paul VI said of Jesus: "He is like us but more perfectly human, simple, poor, humble, and yet, while burdened with work, he is more patient".
This emphasis, along with Graham's own encouragement of inter-denominational cooperation, allowed many churches to rally behind Graham's crusades. "Singing for the Billy Graham Crusade, there were thousands of people in Madison Square Garden, it was just a humbling, I was honored and I was thrilled to be able to sing for such a great Christian spiritual leader". He is now alive more than ever. "His ministry reflected his personal life and his personal life reflected his ministry". He instituted practical steps to guard himself against temptations of infidelity, financial greed and impropriety, and the lure of power.
It's hard to imagine another US religious leader like Graham filling a stadium for days on end and moving so deftly through the corridors of power that he could minister to Democratic and Republican presidents alike.
In celebration of Billy Graham's life, "The Billy Graham Tribute Channel" began airing February 21.
In an interview with CNN, George W. Bush recounted how Graham "helped him to quit drinking and led him to Jesus".
Billy Graham walked with kings and advised US presidents, yet kept a humility of heart and an uncompromising message of salvation by grace, through faith in Jesus Christ.
I suspect Jesus will say two things in response: "I already have" and "Well done, thou good and faithful servant".
