Alpine skiing-What to look out for in the women's combined

Goggia gets gold; Russian women close in on ending drought

But she knew she would have to forego some events in order to maximize her performance, especially when weather began to play a part in rescheduling races.

"It was tough to contemplate this being my last Olympic downhill race", she added.

In skiing, Shiffrin was restricted to second place in the women's combined, meaning she ended the Games with one gold and one silver - a far cry from the potential five titles she had targetted.

And Vonn failed to finish as her Olympic career, which started as a 17-year-old at Salt Lake City in 2002, came to a disappointing conclusion. For both Vonn and Shiffrin, the future is as clear as the past is now in record, and the world is on notice: the greatest overall skiers on Earth belong to Team USA, and forever to the Centennial State.

Vail's Lindsey Vonn saw her golden dream turn to bronze in the women's downhill Wednesday (Tuesday night in the U.S.) at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, but her pride, emotion and fierce competitive spirit shone through at the end.

Shiffrin jumped into the lead with her combined time of 2 minutes, 21.87 seconds (40.52secs in slalom) but Gisin quickly bested her time as she crossed the line in 2:20.90.

"I'm on the Olympic podium for probably the last time and I'm so grateful", the tearful Vonn told CBC in an interview in Pyeongchang. And in a sport as risky as Alpine skiing, it's understandable Vonn isn't keen on racing another three years after that - especially given her history. It shouldn't be a surprise, given that Gisin came up as a slalom racer and captured a silver medal in the combined at the world championships last February. Previous year I was in front in some races and it's so nice to celebrate with her.

Mikaela Shiffrin sets up Olympic showdown with Lindsey Vonn
Vonn was referring to Saturday's super-G event, where she failed to medal after she slid out on the final turn of the course. Eventually, Shiffrin raced, and she began with an electric performance as she won her third best event, the giant slalom.

Goggia, the downhill victor, paid Vonn the ultimate compliment after the race. For Lindsey Vonn, the goal is a controlled run that will keep her there.

She's also a snowboarder, though, and instead of entering the Alpine downhill, she will switch to her other sport and try to qualify Thursday in the parallel giant slalom. I've won World Cup slaloms before, but that was quite a few years ago. "So those are my last two slalom runs".

The result leaves Vonn, the most decorated female skier of all time, with one Olympic gold and two bronzes to her name, and she will hope to medal once again in the combined event on Thursday, in which Shiffrin is favourite.

"It's amusing, because every time I hear anybody saying anything about this it's "most likely, probably, maybe, we'll see but not sure", she said".

Vonn did not compete in the 2014 Winter Games due to an injury. And I said "Well, then I will be crippled".

'To be able to race for him in these Olympics was very special for me.
