High-level corruption cases, including an influence-peddling scandal involving ousted former President Park Geun-hye, are believed to have contributed to South Korea's low ranking in an annual worldwide corruption index, the country's anti-corruption watchdog said Thursday. Among the countries from South Asia, Bhutan is on top in with a score of 67, ranking 26 globally. With a score of 50, Italy increased its score by eight points in 2017 compared to 2012, however, the country is still 16 points below the regional average for Western Europe.

At the 34th position, Botswana was ranked the least corrupt nation in Africa with a score of 61 per cent.

The three nations had a score of 90, 90, and 85 per cent respectively in 2016.

Transparency International in its report has expressed its concern about the growing threats to the journalists, activists, opposition leaders and even staff of law enforcement or watchdog agencies.

He noted that a review of the historical records show that this performance appears to be the best score and ranks over the last 10 years.

Also according to the report, while the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested and arraigned several politicians and public servants, it accused the Buhari administration of failing to address corruption among key government officials.

The Transparency International organization released their annual "Corruptions Perceptions Index report for the year 2017 on February 21".

New Zealand has been ranked the least corrupt country and Somalia the worst.
