White House Praises Senate Budget Deal
But on Wednesday, Senate leaders reached an agreement on a two-year budget deal that would increase spending but without money for a border wall or protections for Dreamers.
Kelly told reporters at the Capitol that he was "not so sure this president has the authority to extend it" because the original program protecting the immigrants was not based on law.
"We know that we can't step back". Ending the DACA program entirely has the potential to impair the US medical system.
Arguably most importantly, Trump and Kelly are both comparing apples to oranges here - they're comparing the number of people who could sign up for their program to the number of people who did sign up for Obama's. But he also ended the program initiated by former President Barack Obama that granted them protections.
Though Trump had set March 5 as the date for DACA to expire, that deadline has been temporarily prolonged after a federal judge blocked DACA's termination and ordered the Trump administration to resume processing applications. That means that if Congress does not act by next month, some Dreamers could start getting deported.
"All we ask is a permanent solution that does not harm anyone else in our community", Davila said.
"It provides what the Pentagon needs to restore our military's edge for years to come", said Ryan. "And it's gonna change", Trump said. "Without [DACA], I wouldn't be able to enroll for dual credit classes (classes that earn high school and college credits) that I was completely qualified for".
If, however, Republicans continue to refuse a vote on a relatively clean DACA bill (with some border security thrown in), they should make crystal clear who is responsible - Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Ryan, and the GOP House and Senate majorities. The president is often a wild card in any high-stakes debate.
"Our upcoming debate on DACA, border security and other issues will be a process that is fair to all sides", McConnell said.
If and when the budget bill does pass the Senate, it will go to the House where it faces an uncertain fate. "Hopefully we will not be in that situation again".
The White House announced in January that the President would endorse a path to citizenship for as many as 1.8 million young immigrants in exchange for border wall funding and sweeping changes to the immigration system.

"Although we are hopeful that this lapse in appropriations will be of short duration, employees should report to work for their next regularly scheduled tour of duty to undertake orderly shutdown activities", read the memo, first reported by ABC News.
Trump interrupted her: "You can say what you want".
Pelosi railed against the plan for almost eight hours on the House floor, demanding a DACA fix.
He urged "in no other country in the world there are such stupid laws as we have when it comes to immigration, they need to be changed, it's not a matter of politics, Republicans and democrats, it's a matter of common sense".
To me, it looks like former Federal Bureau of Investigation deputy director Andrew McCabe, former Federal Bureau of Investigation counterespionage section chief Peter Strzok, former associate deputy attorney general Bruce Ohr and perhaps others were anticipating a Clinton presidency.
Kelly angered people who said he demeaned immigrants with bullying and offensive language.
"I work two jobs".
"I don't like the idea of an extension", Tillis said.
Whether the White House would sign such a short-term deal is unclear.
Trump was meeting with law enforcement officials to discuss the MS-13 gang problem in the US when he said he would "love" to see another shutdown over immigration policy if current loophole prevents deporting members of the group whose slogan is "Kill, Rape, Control".
