Mr Trump was said to have uttered "shithole" during last Thursday's conversation with senators in the Oval Office, a version backed up by Democrat Dick Durbin and some Republicans.

Trump's comments were immediately denounced as racist and xenophobic by lawmakers in the United States and global leaders.

When Mr Durbin was challenged about his version of what term Mr Trump used, the IL senator said: "I stand by every word I said about what was said".

President Donald Trump insisted Sunday night that he was not a racist, after days of people pointing out that his recent comments on immigration were racist.

And according to the State Department, several countries have summoned U.S. diplomats to the respective nations they reside in to answer for Trump's comment, with more expected this week.

Reports later emerged in USA media that Mr Trump had asked during the meeting: "Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?"

The president has said any deal must include funding for the wall as well as changes to make the immigration system a more merit-based structure. I believe it is vitally important to come to a bipartisan solution to the immigration and border challenges we face today. Trump also questioned why the United States should admit more Haitians.

Who backed up the claims?

On Friday, he denied using that language.

Love, whose parents are from Haiti, had criticized Trump for his remarks and called on him to apologize. The comment was said to have been made during a meeting discussing protections for immigrants.

Referring to "shithole", Mr Perdue said on Friday that he and Mr Cotton "do not recall the President saying these comments specifically". The president, in the meeting, also questioned the need to admit more Haitians to the US, according to people who were briefed on the conversation but were not authorized to describe the meeting publicly. The White House also did not explicitly deny the comments.

Instead, according to a tweet from the Washington Post's Josh Dawsey, the senators maybe heard Trump say "shithouse".

What has the reaction been?

The president came under fire last week after he reportedly dismissed immigrants from "shithole" places such as Haiti, El Salvador, or Africa during a meeting with lawmakers. Some have accused the president of racism. "They're not shocking, not even really surprising because this is who Donald Trump is-this is what he thinks".
