The company announced Thursday a list of 20 cities that are in the running for the new location. The city that gets Amazon will see an investment of more than $5 billion along with as many as 50,000 jobs.

Now the Capital City has found out it is one of 20 finalists for the headquarters. Indeed, the majority of finalists are concentrated on the other side of the Mississippi: Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, Raleigh and Washington, D.C. Toronto is the only finalist outside the United States.

After Amazon announced Thursday that Montgomery County was the only Maryland location among the top 20 contenders for the project, Hogan released a statement praising the jurisdiction.

"Our innovation district has grown, the city has momentum, we're keeping young people, and we now have a relationship with Amazon that we didn't have before, so I think it's all good".

An Amazon official said in a news release that the company learned, through the process of accepting applications, about new communities across North America that could be considered for future investment and jobs.

Only two cities west of the Rockies made the cut: Los Angeles and Denver.

Last thing NY needs is a payroll tax
The state's existing law requires online marketplaces to collect the tax on sales to NY residents if the seller is based in NY . After decades spent trying to flawless the model welfare state, it - and we state and local taxpayers - are in a bit of a bind.

"I mean, it is about the next best thing that could happen", said David Heard, CEO of Tech Bloc.

Amazon said in a statement that it will dive deeper into the remaining bids in the coming months and plans to make a final decision later this year. Amazon's solicitation to local governments and real estate developers and landlords for bids a year ago sparked a frenzied competition.

North American cities have been tripping over each other to give away tax dollars to Amazon in hopes of attracting the company's second headquarters - and the competition is getting fiercer as the list gets smaller.

Some Seattle residents have said Amazon's growth put strain on the city's transportation infrastructure and has contributed to a dramatic spike in housing costs - affecting low-income residents and favoring the tech elite. Philly's point of contact at Amazon said a conference call will follow to discuss the next steps this week.

Amazon is headquartered in Seattle.

According to Amazon's request for proposal, the company is looking for buildings of at least 500,000 square feet or sites with at least 100 acres of greenfield space and utilities in place, among other considerations.
