California mudslides: 1250 rescuers searching 'for a miracle'

Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said residents who had stayed behind or tried to check on damage in neighbourhoods had hindered the recovery effort.

As the names of the 17 California mudslide victims were released Thursday (local time), crews kept digging through the muck and rubble looking for more people. An active search and rescue operation is ongoing, officials said. Seventeen people were confirmed dead and eight were missing.

"We've got a window that's closing, but we're still very optimistic. It's a vicious cycle".
