Health officials report 127 positive flu tests, 1 death

Flu epidemic is crippling America - particularly kids: Rate of under-fives hospitalized with deadly H3N2 has DOUBLED in just one week - as CDC warns new viral strains are emerging

'Flu is everywhere right now,' CDC doctor says, as influenza widespread in most states

Data from the first week of January (see map above) show the majority of the country is gripped by the H3N2 strain of the flu, with a majority of states reporting high levels of influenza activity.

The worst flu season in years is only getting worse, with 49 states now seeing widespread misery, USA health officials report. "The season has started early, and it is probably peaking right about now", Jernigan added.

"What we can see is a very rapid increase in the numbers of people coming in to see their healthcare providers", Dr Jernigan said. 51-year old Jenny Ching succumbed to complications from the flu just two days after being admitted to the hospital with what she thought was just a bad cold.

Most flu shots cover four flu viruses - two influenza A viruses - H3N2 and H1N1 - and two B viruses.

As of midnight Thursday, the hospital had 70 in-patients with some type of respiratory virus or illness, said Julie Koch, Salem Health infection prevention manager.

Flu is primarily spread by infected people coughing or sneezing droplets that land on other people nearby. Experts say those who passed away were elderly, and most had underlying health issues. It was back last winter but the vaccine was a better fit. LA County is seeing widespread influenza which means emergency rooms and urgent cares are packed.

"We average about 75-100 kids per year in a nation of 75 million kids who die from flu".

According to Dr Jernigan, the flu is not expected to be as devastating to the United States as it was to Australia, where vaccination rates are lower and the general population is older. The lone flu death in Marin County this year involved a person under 65, and it's not known if the person was vaccinated. Meanwhile, San Diego County reported 91 deaths total.

County health officials reported Friday that they were seeing a 27 percent increase in the number of flu cases over the same time span in 2016. "More than 90 percent of beds are filled within those public health districts", says Dr. Scott Harris, of the Alabama Department of Public Health. "It' really is important for us to understand the full spectrum of how influenza activity is affecting our residents". "Go to bed, take Tylenol or Motrin for the aches pains and fever, get lots of fluids and wait it out", Dr. Wilde advises.

Health officials also urged people to continue to practice good hygiene such as hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, not touching the eyes, nose, or mouth, and staying home if sick.
