IU President McRobbie shares statement on proposed tax reform legislation with University Faculty Council

Grad Students Would Be Hit By Massive Tax Hike Under House GOP Plan

The Chronicle of Higher Education reports that some graduate students could see their taxes triple under the House bill.

UO graduate students said they are protesting the House of Representatives' proposal to eliminate a long-standing tax exemption for tuition waivers.

However, for some graduate students this may be insufficient, and there are people who expect the administration to take a more proactive stance in the form of contingency plans or outlined strategies that people can understand and to which they can relate.

University spokesperson Stephen McCarthy wrote in an emailed statement that Penn is "actively working" to address the concerns of graduate students.

David Pascoe, professor of kinesiology, said students are already pressed for finances and taxing them on tuition waivers would limit their ability to support themselves. "I would either have to quit or go into massive debt or go somewhere else in the world if I want to get this degree and make a difference in this world like I want to". Balmes also benefits from grants that are paid directly to the university (also now not taxed) and tuition waivers, all of which are worth slightly more than $30,000.

As a second-year graduate student at the University of Montana, Rogers receives a tuition waiver for teaching and doing research at the university.

Rock estimates his effective tax rate would be about 30 percent if his $19,600 worth of tuition and fee waivers were counted as income.

Bloom said the longtime provision benefited 145,000 graduate students in 2011-12. "Without that, it would have been impossible for me to study", he said. Students are holding rallies on their campus quads. "You gotta call your local representatives and you have to tell them who you are, where you're from, that you're a voter", says Chapman.

As a second-year PhD student at CU, I find all of this very concerning.

Many said they're uncertain about their fate in higher education.

"The UC system has prized itself on diversity - its first-generation, low-income students - and this is just going to reverse all these gains", said Yen, president of the UC Student-Workers Union (UAW 2865).

Continuing work on his master's degree would be hard enough with the added tax burden, Giese said, but taxing tuition waivers could kill his hopes for pursuing a Ph.D. Attend our Graduate Student Rally Protesting Tax Reform Bill on Wednesday at 11 a.m. on the Pentacrest.

As she started to do the math, tears welled up.

"It's a reality of life", she said. Despite what public opinion is, the Republican majority and the president seem determined to get a bill passed in the next couple of weeks.

Claims that the end of graduate education is nigh are premature, but the conversation around graduate tuition waivers should catalyze broader discussions about the problems open-ended federal subsidies have created for both students and taxpayers. In protest of this potential increase, grad students on University of California campuses joined academics across the state and country and walked out of classes today.

As Cooper concludes, universities would likely simply restructure their aid packages to continue to accommodate graduate students.

Global graduate students at the University would face unique challenges under the tax plan. Students' loan interest deduction is also at risk for repeal.

"If this bill were to pass". Once it does, the differences between the two bills would need to be resolved.

There are strict work-hour requirements at the University, Bera said, and the increased tax burden would further stress students.

Meanwhile, a lack of diversity remains a pressing issue in STEM fields: A recent report by the National Science Foundation found that black, Hispanic and American Indian or Alaska Native students made up only 13 percent of those who receive doctorates in science or engineering fields. At 2:23 p.m., GET-UP member and history Ph.D. student Emma Teitelman called all the graduate student protestors to attention and encouraged them to call the number of U.S. Senator Pat Toomey's (R-Pa.) D.C. office at the same time.
