NHS mental health staff are assaulted more than 42,000 times a year

Some 86 per cent of those surveyed said their job and being at work was important to protecting and maintaining their mental health.

"You cannot build the economy without creating wealth, and you cannot create wealth without health, and you cannot have health without mental health, so mental health means total health".

Tracey Orr, support services executive, has spearheaded the society's efforts to tackle the issue through a mental health working party.

Maureen Irons-Morgan, explained that two of the most common issues that are dealt with every day are anxiety and depression.

Morgan added. She said the way to deal with this is to help employers to understand more about mental-health conditions.

"As a healthcare organisation we have a duty to support our community's health, but as an employer, we also have a duty to support our staff", said Dr Helena Jopling, public health registrar at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. "Like any other illness, sometimes there are genetic factors and sometimes there are social factors like stress-related matters or stressful conditions that persons may encounter".

Truth is, we can all benefit from a day to clear the fog from our heads: "Taking a mental-health day can improve energy, motivation, mood, and one's ability to manage stress, and time off might actually increase overall productivity rather than decrease it", says Shannon Byrne, Ph.D., clinical psychologist at Duke University Health System.

Twenty eight per cent have had a member of staff come to them with concerns surrounding their mental health, but only 42 per cent are certain which procedures to follow when a mental health issue is raised. As part of the partnership, Chartwells is calling on its teams in schools, academies, colleges and universities across the United Kingdom, to wear something yellow to raise awareness and funds to support the charity's #HelloYellow campaign for World Mental Health Day. "We challenge those who have not yet implemented mental health strategies to make this a top priority".

Young adults, between the ages of 18 and 24, are the age group that worry the most about being discriminated against at work due to their mental health.
