Thousands of Rohingyas have already fled their homeland to take refuge in Bangladesh.

More than half of the estimated 412,000 Rohingya who have arrived in Bangladesh live in fragile conditions without proper shelter, clean drinking water and sanitation.

There are acute shortages of almost all forms of aid, with many Rohingya huddling under tarps as their only protection from monsoon rains.

The new settlements will be built within the next 10 days on 2,000 acres in the Cox's Bazar district near Bangladesh's border with Myanmar, officials have said.

The U.N. has described the violence against the Rohingya in Burma as ethnic cleansing - an organized effort to rid an area of an ethnic group.

The Bangladesh government has also been holding two Myanmar photographers covering the Rohingya crisis for a German magazine.
