Scenes From Florida Cities Affected by Irma

Florida has long dealt with hurricanes, including a stretch of eight hurricanes in two years while Jeb Bush was governor, but Irma's wide reach has proved daunting.

Around midday, Irma's center began pushing into Georgia, where a tornado spun off by the storm was reported on the coast, and firefighters inland had to rescue several people after trees fell on their homes.

More than 18,000 utilities workers from 30 states and Canada stationed at almost 30 staging sites across the state are assessing damage and restoring power, FPL representatives said Monday. "And we certainly understand the frustration", he said.

Ten deaths in the U.S. are being blamed on the storm, which left 6.5 million homes without power in Florida alone.

Irma triggered orders for more than six million people in the United States to flee to safety, one of the biggest evacuations in the country's history.

FPL has only been providing outage information at the county level and a media relations spokesperson said it is not able to give outages by areas at this time.

He said boats were cast ashore, water, sewers and electricity were knocked out, and "I don't think I saw one trailer park where nearly everything wasn't overturned".

"There's devastation. I just hope everybody survived", Florida Gov. Rick Scott said Monday after flying over the area.

Hurricane Irma: What you need to know
Irma is expected to drop 2 to 5 inches of rain across SC and northern portions of Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. Miami International Airport, one of the busiest in the country, halted passenger flights through at least Monday.

"Basically, every house in the Keys was impacted some way", FEMA Administrator Brock Long said. The National Guard also has arrived in the island chain amid official fears that a humanitarian crisis may be developing in the stricken region.

"Along with the high wind threat, another concern will be the potential for life-threatening storm surge inundation along and near the Southwest Florida Gulf Coast as the storm exits", the weather service warned West Central Florida.

With sustained winds of 65 mph and centered about 70 miles east of Tallahassee, Irma is carrying its fierce winds and battering rain over southern Georgia.

"Life-threatening storm surge" is a danger along portions of the coasts of Florida, Georgia and SC, the NHC said.

There will be heavy rain accumulations into Wednesday in parts of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Mississippi and North Carolina, forecasters said.

A sailboat washed ashore at Watson Island in the Hurricane Irma aftermath Monday, Sept. 11, 2017 in Miami. Facebook groups were forming Monday to help from afar. Devastating flooding can also be observed in numerous videos.

It's still too early determine exactly how much it will cost to rebuild the state, but some estimates say Irma's damage could total as much as $100 billion, making it one of the costliest hurricanes of all time, according to AccuWeather President Joel Myers. The Walt Disney Co. said its Disney World theme parks and Disney Springs will reopen Tuesday wotj regular hours. In the meantime, shelters and distribution centers for food and water are being opened. Federal officials estimated one-quarter of all homes in the Keys were destroyed.

Residents in area that had yet to see the worst either evacuated the area or prepared to shelter in place - including animals in Tampa's Busch Gardens. Sea World also said all of its animals are safe.
