A weakened Irma spread misery around the Southeast on Monday, triggering coastal flooding in parts of Georgia and SC while dumping heavy rains around the region.

Irma, which made landfall in the Florida Keys yesterday as a Category 4 hurricane, has now been downgraded to a tropical storm.

The entire Keys are closed.

Millions of people have been left without power, streets have been flooded and roofs have been ripped off homes.

Hurricane Irma, despite having weakened past its transit over Cuba, still has enough power to slam Florida's Gulf Coast with sheets of rain and surging winds. Now that the storm has passed, the airports are assessing damage and updating travelers on their plans to restart.

At the very least, the tiny island is back open after bracing for the historic storm, Marco Island Fire Rescue Chief Mike Murphy said Monday. When the storm came in, we saw some storm surge in Miami.

About 5.8 million homes and businesses have lost power in Florida and Georgia due to Hurricane Irma, according to state officials and utilities on Monday.

It killed at least 26 people before leaving the Caribbean for Florida.

Irma, which was expected to cause billions of dollars in damage to the third-most-populous USA state, it hit just days after the Houston area was deluged by unprecedented flooding from Hurricane Harvey, which dumped more than 127cm of rain in parts of Texas.

Governor Rick Scott says he's been in close contact with the White House. He says he hopes everyone who stayed behind survived Irma.

Irma is expected to drop 2 to 5 inches of rain across SC and northern portions of Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi.

Officials in Florida were getting their first look at storm damage in some areas Monday. "Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 35 miles per hour (55 km/h) with higher gusts".

On Monday morning, Irma weakened to a tropical storm as it moved into northern Florida. The area was in for heavy rain Monday, too. Either way, we'll keep you posted!

Authorities in Florida are undertaking massive relief operations as the magnitude of Hurricane Irma's destructive path is revealed. Its two water parks, however, will not reopen until later in the week. The plan is to drop off damage assessment teams in Key West before traveling to Opa-locka in the afternoon.
