The new Leaf, on sale in Japan from October and elsewhere early next year, has a range of about 150 miles (241 kilometres) on a single charge according to USA environmental regulator estimates, up from its predecessor's 107 miles thanks to a bigger, 40 kilowatt hour (kWh) battery.
Tallying some of the mentioned cars, Model 3 can run up to 220 miles on a single charge, while the Chevrolet's Bolt can run you a good 238 miles.
"The new Nissan Leaf drives Nissan Intelligent Mobility, which is the core brand strategy for Nissan's future", said Hiroto Saikawa, president and chief executive officer of Nissan. The company sold almost 50,000 Leafs world-wide past year. This autonomy is also due to grow according to Nissan, with an upgrade to stage-two autonomous driving capability in 2018. Tesla's Model S was the second-best seller for the month with an estimated total of 2,100.
The Leaf will come with the Nissan ProPilot autonomous driving suite, which can navigate the vehicle in a single-lane and in stop-and-go traffic. The tech also allows the vehicle to self-park nose- or tail-first as well as parallel, assuming we get the Japanese spec model.
Fully charged, the system offers a cruising range of 400km, with a charging time of 16 hours at 3kW, or eight hours at 6kW.
On the road, the new Leaf promises improved performance - 148bhp up from 108bhp helping slash the 0-62mph time to 9.8 seconds. Several breakthroughs in battery technology are likely needed before they become affordable and practical for regular consumers. If you are disappointed by the rather minimalistic design of the Model 3's interior, you'll be happy to know that the new Leaf has a more conventional dashboard arrangement complete with a traditional gauge cluster, plenty of knobs/buttons and a revised shift lever.
When is the next solar eclipse in my country?
Scientists are eager to study how the total solar eclipse will impact weather and what it could mean for future research. Viewers might also see solar prominences, or gas clouds shooting off the edge of the sun, which will appear pink.
Here it is - Nissan's new-generation Nissan LEAF electric auto.
The feature is made possible by the switching on-and-off feature of electric gadgetry, unlike the more standard internal combustion engine, and it's already available on other electric vehicles like those from US maker Tesla.
To be sure, the Leaf joins several other automakers vying for a piece of Tesla's (TSLA) electric vehicle business. Inside the cabin, the Leaf now feels more like a normal vehicle, with most drive-affecting buttons (Eco Mode or e-Pedal) grouped together and the infotainment system featuring a 7-inch display (smaller on the base S trim). Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have also been added. More than a 160 km than that on the outgoing Leaf. Sharp angles and a sportier profile replace the soft curves and bulges that marked the last generation.
The new Nissan Leaf should be faster too: Power output is now at 110 kW and torque has been increased to 320 Nm, so it should be pretty rapid to 30mph.
The new Leaf takes about 40 minutes to charge while in quick-charging mode. A Chinese investment firm, GSR Capital, plans to buy that battery venture.
