Solar eclipse visible in MI on Monday, Aug. 21, 2017

Solar eclipse comes Monday

The difference between an annular eclipse and a total eclipse is due to the fluctuation in the moon's distance from Earth.

Your bag is packed, you've got your camera and eclipse glasses, your hotel room that you booked previous year is waiting for you - but the forecast is calling for persistent rain.

The path of totality, where the sun is completely obscured, is less than 70 miles wide. Legitimate solar eclipse glasses have special-purpose filters to protect your eyes, while fake glasses do not.

The last total solar eclipse in the United States occurred almost 4 decades back, on February 26, 1979. I've seen a total eclipse before in 1979, and that's what is literally driving me to see Monday's great celestial event.

Use approved solar eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers that are compliant with the ISO 12312-2 global safety standard for such products. The Great American Eclipse, and Music City is ramping up its festivities.

Do not look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars, or other optical device.

So how much do you know about the solar eclipse?

The Northside Branch of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System will host a viewing party from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

"Nobody should expect to see the corona in Amarillo or Canyon", Craig said. These work by refocusing the sun's light into a dark space... to make the eclipse more pronounced. At this point it will appear more dim, and the real view will be through eclipse glasses, with only a crescent sliver of the sun in view.

When the moon lines up between the sun and Earth, the moon will cast a shadow onto Earth.

For the best view, try to find an unobstructed area where you can look south/southwest.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 204.69 points, or 0.9 percent, to 21,844.01, just shy of its low point for the day. Benchmark U.S. 10-year notes last rose 6/32 in price to yield 2.1905 percent, from 2.211 percent late on Thursday.

After 20 seconds, smoke could be seen coming from the eye and Mark explained: "I've got to tell you the smell is pretty grim".

Peter Suneson is the community outreach coordinator and still remembers viewing a partial solar eclipse as an elementary school student in 1991 in Norman, Oklahoma. Visit to access eclipse duration charts. When the eclipse is peaking locally, it will get very dark outside if it is cloudy. "The main thing is to never look directly into it". The Chattahoochee Nature Center will be hosting its own event. Residents can bring lunch or buy one from Thumpers Grill. The eclipse ends at 11:46 a.m.

The picnic is free and the admission fee for the center has been reduced to $5 per person for Monday only.

Take it from me, fishing during an eclipse can be fun.

Just take two pieces of paper or cardboard, make a pinhole in one, then put the other paper on the ground. Florida International University is opening up its observatory for a watch party, as is Fox Observatory in Sunrise.

As with most outdoor activities this time of year in the Texas Panhandle, viewers will have to be mindful of the weather.

The weather forecast for the eclipse is becoming clearer, and luckily the skies are looking clearer as well.

The effect of the eclipse itself on the temperature probably won't be dramatic here.

Safety on the highways is the ultimate goal of America's Road Team, which is why the group of elite professional truck drivers reminds the general motoring public to pay full attention on the road while driving and to be aware of the high volume of travelers. Locally, chief meteorologist Eric Wilhelm will lead the coverage from the WFMJ studio and will also provide a "roof top" look of the partial eclipse that will be visible in the Mahoning Valley.

If you are one of the 200 million Americans who live within a one-day drive of the path of totality, hopefully you have made plans to view the awe-inspiring event.
