Officials are also linking the two attacks to an earlier explosion that destroyed a house in Alcanar, killing one person and wounding at least one more.
The first attack began shortly after 5pm local time (4pm BST), when a white Fiat van sped through Las Ramblas, a busy street in Barcelona.
Amaq said ISIL had launched the attack in response to calls to target states taking part in the US-led coalition battling the group in Iraq and Syria.

Catalan authorities say the attacks are linked. They refused to say if he was one of the two detained.
