Kim Jong-un the Communist dictator of the Democratic Republic of North Korea
President Donald Trump has refused to back down from his threats on North Korea, despite criticisms that he was needlessly and dangerously escalating tensions in region.
Trump and Xi also agreed that the recent adoption of a United Nations Security Council resolution on North Korea was an important step toward achieving peace and stability on the peninsula, it added. But while there is little remaining doubt about North Korea's nuclear capabilities, the US has not accepted it as a nuclear power and is not likely to do so any time soon.
After the call between Xi and Trump, however, the White House said "the relationship between the two presidents is an extremely close one" and that Trump was looking forward to seeing Xi in China later this year for a "historic" meeting.
Trump has not been deterred. Launching a "bolt from the blue" against the United States, Japan, or anyone else for that matter would be suicidal for the DPRK leadership.
Q: What could keep a lid on this crisis? "History shows that we can, if we must, tolerate nuclear weapons in North Korea - the same way we tolerated the far greater threat of thousands of Soviet nuclear weapons during the Cold War".
It's fair to question how it's working out for him.
He also spoke by phone with China's president, whom the Trump administration considers critical to the diffusion of the crisis. Bluster from the president can increase the dangers of miscalculation or cause a downward spiral of words and deeds.

In a report to lawmakers released in July, the USTR accused China of engaging in "widespread infringing activity, including trade secret theft, rampant online piracy and counterfeiting, and high levels of physical pirated and counterfeit exports to markets around the globe". As Greg Afinogenov points out over at n+1, the national security establishment would be more than happy to replace Trump with a respectable steward of the nuclear arsenal.
Oh, and the Shifts boys are getting their Leaving Cert results.
. It's a strange kind of respect it has earned, to be sure. It's a statement, has nothing to do with dare. "I can say this, your tourism, you're going to go up like tenfold with the expenditure of no money, so I congratulate you". What worries me is the heightened intensity of those attacks, they get specific about Guam, that they involve the foreign minister himself, Ri Yong-ho, who is a reasonable person, making those bombastic statements. The contrast between Eastern and Western influence is as stark at the 38th Parallel as it was at the Berlin Wall, and countries pursuing their own interests will have no trouble choosing sides.
North Korea has said many times it has no intention of giving up its nuclear weapons.
That said, it's probably unfair to lay fully half the blame for this heated environment at the feet of Kim Jong-un and the North Korean government. In his latest salvos in the war of words, Trump said Friday that the US military was "locked and loaded" and that North Korea would "truly regret it" if it attacked Guam.
Here's our problem: Any madman theory applied sufficiently well is impossible to distinguish from true madness. "North Koreans are not suicidal". He asked not to be named.
USTR argues Beijing uses a range of practices to force U.S. companies to transfer IP, such as by granting regulatory approvals to drug makers that shift production to China or requiring that the designs of foreign products be replicable in China.
"Nobody loves a peaceful solution more than President Trump", Trump told reporters late in the day on Friday at his New Jersey golf club.
"Stay where you are, even if you are separated from your family", it said.
