At least one person was killed in Virginia on Saturday after white nationalists clashed with counter-demonstrators and a auto plowed into a crowd near the scene of the earlier melee, the mayor of Charlottesville said.

The helicopter crash happened a few miles outside of Charlottesville and it was not immediately clear what caused the crash.

A state of emergency was declared in the city of Charlottesville because of street violence, ahead of a planned march by white nationalists.

"I'm hearing 9 people hit now".

McAuliffe had a pointed message for the right-wing groups that flocked to Charlottesville on Saturday: "Go home".

"You are not wanted in this great commonwealth".

He also responded to a tweet by first lady Melania Trump - whose comments on Charlottesville preceded her husband's - in which she said that "no good comes from violence".

Witnesses reportedly told local media that the chopper was seen flying low over homes in the area before going down in the area of golf course. A White House spokesperson later doubled down on the equivocation, saying that the president condemned "violence, hatred and bigotry from all sources and sides".

Five people suffered critical injuries and four had serious injuries from the vehicle strike, the University of Virginia Health System said.

Jason Kessler, who organized Saturday's "Unite the Right" rally, said he doesn't consider himself to be a white nationalist.

The driver has not been identified at this time. "Nor is there any doubt that we, as a city, have an obligation to protect those rights, the people who seek to exercise them, and the broader community in which they do". Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) both urged the president to use the words "white supremacists" and to label the violance a terrorist attack.

White nationalists, neo-Nazis and members of the "alt-right" exchange volleys of pepper spray with counter-protesters.

The Charlottesville City Council voted unanimously to allow the police chief to declare a curfew.

"I am heartbroken that a life has been lost here".

Mayor Michael Signer said he was disgusted that the white nationalists had come to his town and blamed Trump for inflaming racial prejudices with his campaign a year ago.

A white nationalist rally turned violent in Charlottesville, Virginia on August 12.

In the afternoon, a silver sedan driving at high speed plowed into the crowd before reversing along the same street.

A rally in Emancipation Park in Virginia around the statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee ended before it began, as authorities shut the event down due to violence.

Members of a self-described militia, dressed in camouflage and armed with long guns, said they meant to keep the peace between opposing protesters. Police have not offered any details on the auto incident. An NBC reporter on the scene said that six ambulances had arrived on the scene and later departed. "I couldn't talk for awhile", he said. The National Transportation Safety Board and Virginia State Police are investigating the crash. They were at a park protesting the removal of a Confederate statue.

A auto ran over a group of counterprotesters.
