South Koreans say war with North Korea unlikely: 'I'm not scared'
The North Koreans say they're developing plans to fire four intermediate-range missiles headed for the waters about 20 miles off of Guam's coast.
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters, "Nothing that I have seen and nothing that I know of would indicate that the situation has dramatically changed in the last 24 hours". But if the missiles aren't expected to hit the island - the stated goal is to have them hit waters well offshore - should it?
Baik went on to say that North Korea's remarks about Guam "are not helpful for the advancement of inter-Korean relations".
Even though missiles from the North would nearly certainly carry dummy warheads, analysts said, a failure to intercept them would deal Mr. Trump a mortifying setback and could even weaken the rationale for installing an American missile defense system in South Korea.
Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, estimated the risk of a military conflict between the US and North Korea as "very high", and said Moscow was deeply concerned. "And even people who make cell phones, who have substantially more testing than THAAD does, sometimes have cell phones burn up", he said. But it wasn't known until now that the contacts have continued, or that they have broached matters other than US detainees.
"Definitely, I know Guam is a pretty good target because it's important to the U.S. because of the military", she said.
They kicked off a weeks-long joint military exercise Thursday against the backdrop of missile launches by North Korea.
Homeland Security in Guam said on Friday that a public warning system in place that would alert residents of the island of 160,000 people that a missile is incoming.
"The system's created to engage multiple targets simultaneously, so that should be quite feasible to do", Bennett said.

It's created to destroy ballistic missiles during their final phase of flight. The country, still technically at war with the North after the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce and not a peace treaty, has deployed the US -built Patriot missile defence system, as well as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system.
Since May the U.S. has conducted 11 drills of such a raid, in which the bombers would take off from the Pacific island of Guam and take out targets with precisely guided missiles.
Last month the North Atlantic Council council condemned North Korea's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile and called for UN-led sanctions on the issue. It would be up to American missile defenses to knock out any that survived and that North Korea might use to attack the United States or its allies.
"I don't think North Korea has a good measure of how accurate the missile is at this point", said Michael Elleman, an expert with the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
If any of the four long-range missiles successfully made it through US defense, Mount said, it would be a huge victory for the rogue state. Its stated flight path over Japan is also very aggressive - it has recently tried to avoid flying over neighboring countries by shooting its missiles up at a very high angle to land in the ocean. They're used to living with intimidation from North Korea, including in 2013 when Pyongyang warned that the island was within its "striking range".
