The governor of Guam said on Wednesday (Aug 9) North Korea's warning of a possible missile strike on the US Pacific territory was no threat and the island was prepared for "any eventuality", with defences strategically placed to protect its people.

Mr Trump has said he would respond to any such action with "fire and fury".

Russian Federation and China have repeatedly called for a political solution to the long-standing crisis and the renewal of the 'six-party talks.' Moscow and Beijing are opposed to any further missile launches carried out by North Korea, while they also call on the U.S. to halt military drills in the region. Here's a look at the USA military's role on the island, which became a US territory in 1898.

The possibility of a nuclear confrontation is considered remote.

The Trump administration's first recourse has been diplomacy.

Most of North Korea's recent missile tests have landed in the Sea of Japan, which lies between Japan and the eastern coast of the Asian continent.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Thursday that by mid-August Pyongyang will have a plan to launch four intermediate-range missiles at the U.S. territory of Guam, where American military bases are located.

"Of all the military options ..." The Dow also took a dive after the exchange of verbal threats between Trump and North Korea. The rotations also came as North Korea increasingly upped the ante in the standoff over its development of nuclear weapons.

He told CNN that while there was some fear, people were used to living with North Korean posturing.

He estimated that at least a quarter-million Americans would have to be moved. In a statement this week, Bordallo called North Korea's threat to target Guam "dangerous", saying she has discussed threats with Mattis and other defense leaders, who have "consistently reassured me that Guam is protected". Radio Free Asia said North Korea has entered emergency mode by ordering its people to be on the highest alert, not to mention encouraging teenagers to volunteer for the Army.

The officials told NBC that the attack would originate from the Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. But that would forfeit any element of surprise.

"Sometimes I feel like they fear it but they just don't want to show it, don't want to express it", Martinez said.

Diplomatic efforts are also deeply complicated. "We know that any moment, they could send those (weapons). but I think a lot of us in the end are not too anxious".

To prevent nuclear attacks from elsewhere, namely Russian Federation and China, the United States has relied on its potent nuclear arsenal. North Korea, too, must stop unnecessary provocations once and for all.

Guam's Homeland Security Adviser George Charfauros said Friday it would take 14 minutes for a missile fired from North Korea to reach Guam. But few analysts are confident he would be restrained. That means they sense the increasing likelihood of an armed conflict between the United States and North Korea.

But General Thurman anxious that the war of words was fueling tensions and adding to the risk of miscalculation.

"Everyone is going about doing the same routine, but everyone is talking about the threat", Josie Sokala, who lives in the village of Mangilao on the eastern shore of Guam, said in a message. "He wants to be on the world scene".

"Nobody really deserves to be caught in the middle of these games", said Victoria-Lola Leon Guerrero, an activist who campaigns for a lowered military presence.
