Cheers and singing broke out at the national tallying centre as the results were announced.

Kenya has seen post-election violence.

More than 15 million people cast their ballots, representing 78 percent of the registered voters.

Opposition candidate Raila Odinga claimed his loss was down to vote rigging and said the election was a "charade". "We are there, ready to dialogue, to discourse and engage so that we can build this nation together", the president-elect said.

Supporters took to the street to celebrate whilst his opponents protested in parts of the capital and west of the country.

However, there were also protests.

That stance has raised tensions, with Odinga's followers burning tyres in recent days in some of Nairobi's slums and protesting in the western city of Kisumu.

The deaths occurred on the outskirts of Kisumu, a city where opposition leader Raila Odinga has strong support. They have not responded to them.

He said that he was extending a "hand of friendship" to "our older brother", Mr Odinga, 72. "One can conclude that they (Kenya's Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission) were not keen on taking our concerns seriously".

"The AU should have vetted the members of those observer missions because clearly the delegations rushed to judgement and gave this commission to go on with making this announcement and telling us we can do what we want suggesting that we should go to court".

The Pound tumbled by around a cent against the Euro today as the Bank of England left its monetary policy unchanged. But while remaining above the Bank's 2% inflation target, it represented an easing from the previous month's 2.9%.

And they cautioned that complaints with the process should be taken up through legal means, without recourse to the kind of violence that racked the country after its 2007 elections.

The election commission urged Kenyans to be patient and said it should have an update by mid-afternoon Friday, though the counting process has been repeatedly delayed.

The election commission rejected the claims, pointing out they contained basic mathematical errors.

Police have countered the rioters with tear gas, and also live bullets fired into crowds in some instances.

Mr Kenyatta, the son of Kenya's first president after independence from Britain, appealed for calm and unity after the divisive campaign.

On the other hand, worldwide observers including former U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry have called the elections "credible and peaceful".

"If there are disputes or disagreements, the Kenyan constitution is very clear on how they are to be addressed".

The explosion of anger among Odinga loyalists was matched by an outburst of joy in Kenyatta's strongholds from his supporters.

"The observers largely served the interests of the government", Mr Orengo said. The day before, a polling agent from Odinga's party was killed in a machete attack in Tana River county.
