Kenya has seen post-election violence.
More than 15 million people cast their ballots, representing 78 percent of the registered voters.
Opposition candidate Raila Odinga claimed his loss was down to vote rigging and said the election was a "charade". "We are there, ready to dialogue, to discourse and engage so that we can build this nation together", the president-elect said.
Supporters took to the street to celebrate whilst his opponents protested in parts of the capital and west of the country.
However, there were also protests.

On the other hand, worldwide observers including former U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry have called the elections "credible and peaceful".
"If there are disputes or disagreements, the Kenyan constitution is very clear on how they are to be addressed".
The explosion of anger among Odinga loyalists was matched by an outburst of joy in Kenyatta's strongholds from his supporters.
"The observers largely served the interests of the government", Mr Orengo said. The day before, a polling agent from Odinga's party was killed in a machete attack in Tana River county.
