Chaotic West Wing shake-ups continues in White House

01 August 2017, 11:37 | Christie Tate

He took the role of communications director just days ago

Anthony Scaramucci sacked as Donald Trump's communications director

Last week, his travails included the defeat of health care reform - his (and his party's) top legislative priority - along with a Congressional move to limit Trump's authority to deal with Russian Federation, a rebuke by the Pentagon over a presidential directive to ban transgender people from military service, chaos in the White House staff and an extraordinary introduction by his new communications director.

His departure comes after Trump's new chief of staff, General John Kelly was sworn in on Monday. At the time, the White House said Scaramucci would report directly to the president, not the chief of staff. Priebus was obviously a soft target - Trump was eager to see him depart - but attacking Bannon was a bad miscalculation. No name is more bold-faced that Trump's in Trump World.

So Scaramucci joins Spicer, Priebus, FBI Director James Comey, National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara on the list of top administration folks who have left or been purged in these first months of the Trump presidency.

But Kelly still desperately needs a veteran, savvy communications chief - something that's been glaringly absent from the first six months of the Trump administration.

WHIPPLE: You can't just threaten to strap everybody up to a polygraph the way you minimize leaks is you tell the truth, and you run a competent White House staff that engenders loyalty and not fear. "The Marines have landed at the White House". Sanders later brushed aside talk of yet another abrupt shuffle: the idea of Sessions leaving the Justice Department to replace Kelly at the Homeland Security Department.

Sanders said Trump has given full authority to Kelly, and he'll make determinations inside the White House.

Scaramucci had boasted about reporting directly to the president, not the chief of staff.

But as time went on, the president became annoyed with the negative coverage because it "took over everything", the official said. I had high hopes for this Scaramucci guy. But he worries that Trump's penchant for bombast and ridiculing his opponents works against conservative goals. Scaramucci also elevated Sarah Huckabee Sanders to press secretary and allowed cameras back on in the press briefings, both positive moves. Even so, he said it only amounts to "a good first step" toward Kelly's purported mission to fix a White House in chaos.

Small Businesses Unsure About Health Care
Traveling Friday afternoon, President Trump responded to questions about the health care vote by saying, "It's going to be fine". They may also lose trust in their government and their elected leaders, and, eventually, in democratic government itself.

President Donald Trump, according to his White House spokeswoman, was joking on Friday when he told police officers to be "rough" with suspects, comments that were rebuked by police departments across the country.

And after realizing that "the Mooch" follows Kimmel on Twitter, the host said he was able to snag an interview with the former White House aide.

Mr Kelly, known for his no-nonsense approach, could help bring some normality and stability to the Trump ship after a rocky start and stumbles in Congress, Mr Kraushaar said.

Trump's tweets serve as a near constant reminder of those who have tried to bridle the president in the past - and failed.

US President Donald Trump sacked the former Wall Street financier after his foul-mouthed tirade against his colleagues Reince Priebus and Steve Bannon.

David B. Cohen, a University of Akron political science professor writing a book on chiefs of staff, applauded Kelly for doing "things that should have been done on Day One of Reince Priebus's tenure". He said "when the president is talking economy he's in a winning spot".

While Schaff has a hard time believing Trump would ever give up his smartphone, part of the chief of staff's job is to maintain messaging discipline. It's worth noting that most other firms had found Trump's approval fell below 40 percent long ago and that his average approval rating has typically been below that benchmark. "We wish him all the best".
