Trump names John Kelly chief of staff, replacing Reince Priebus

He tagged White House chief of staff Reince Priebus in the now-deleted tweet, but later said reports that he was accusing Priebus of leaking his financial information were "wrong". "Reince is doing a fantastic job at the White House, and I believe he has the president's confidence". President Donald Trump announced the staff shakeup in a Friday tweet. Priebus said he plans to continue to support Mr. Trump's agenda and policies.

"Together we're going to restore safety to our streets and peace to our communities and we're going to destroy the vile, criminal cartel MS-13 and many other gangs", Trump said.

King said Trump told him about the change as they were about to get off the flight. The following Friday, in a tweet that took everybody aback, Trump apparently replaced Priebus with Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly.

A senior White House official told Reuters news agency that Trump had informed Priebus that he would be replacing him two weeks ago. I think he was right to hit the reset button, and I think that it was something that, I think the White House needs.

The next shortest serving chief of staff, Kenneth Duberstein, worked 203 days for President Ronald Reagan from 1988 to 1989.

Then, on Thursday, he was assailed in a remarkable and profane public rebuke by Trump's newly appointed White House communications director, Anthony Scaramucci.

Reince Priebus pushed out as Trump's chief of staff
Scaramucci was named the White House communications director a week ago after Sean Spicer resigned as press secretary. It is the same moderates-versus-conservatives split that doomed the Obamacare rollback.

It's all pretty ridiculous and, though it seems Scaramucci's promises of firing people may achieve Trump's goal of clamping down on leaks, this all only serves to confirm the leaked picture of how dysfunctional things have been in the White House. He is a great American ... and a great leader.

Priebus ally Sean Spicer, who was pulling double duty as communications director and press secretary, quit when Scaramucci was named to the job. I think Kelly's a brilliant pick. "General Kelly has been a star, done an incredible job thus far, respected by everybody. He has been a true star of my Administration", he added.

BENNETT: You know, as a general, John Kelly comes from a chain-of-command structure.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement that Kelly will begin his work as chief of staff on Monday morning.

In the immediate fallout of Priebus' exit, it looked like the former RNC chairman would be going on Hannity first in his initial post-White House interview. That victory helped catapult Priebus to the head of the Republican National Committee, putting him in place to oversee Trump's surprise win in November.

"In case there's any ambiguity in his tweet I can confirm that Scaramucci wants the FBI to investigate Reince for leaking", New York Times reporter Ryan Lizza wrote on Twitter. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Priebus "has been a devoted Chief of Staff to the President from the beginning" and praised him for his "great relationships with members of Congress".
