Total Solar Eclipse Could Prove the Sun Is Bigger Than We Think

Solar Eclipse 2017 You’ll be able to watch it from ridiculous heights thanks to these balloons

The University of Wyoming's planetarium will offer a special program in mid-August as the state prepares for the total solar eclipse on Aug. 21. Most filters cut out details of the images, making it much more hard to determine precisely when the sun fully covers the moon.

There's an incredible event going on in the sky in August of this year, and it's one you're not going to want to miss. On this day, the moon will align perfectly between the sun and Earth, thus blocking the sun's light for the entire United States landscape.

A total solar eclipse takes place when the moon's orbit takes it between the sun and Earth, and it completely blocks our view of the sun. On June 25, 2522 it is predicted that the longest eclipse in the series will occur and last for 7 minutes and 12 seconds. It has been 38 years since the last total solar eclipse seen in the USA, so it has never been photographed digitally. "But just given the fact that the world is mostly water, it's a little bit rare for an eclipse to be crossing an entire continent". The maximum of the eclipse, the time when the full 20 percent will be covered, will be at 6:35 a.m., with the sun rising at 6:02 a.m.

During the two and a half minutes of totality, Clemson researchers will snap many pictures, along with everyone along the path in the USA associated with this experiment, to record the sun's activity.

- NASA has launched its newest app aimed to inspire citizen scientists to share their experiences during the upcoming coast to coast solar eclipse.

Use certified glasses, and before use be sure read all instructions and to inspect the glasses for scratches or other damage to the lenses.

"There is not a safe period where you can take them off...up here it is CRITICAL that they keep their glasses on through the whole event", Everly said.

"We'll have cameras positioned throughout, and we'll have our host, Mike Massimino, in SC, which will be the last place that you will see the eclipse", Etkind said. Eclipses give scientists the opportunity to observe the outer atmosphere of the sun, the corona.

Jubier said that flash spectrum measurements would be most useful, but so would (safely!) unfiltered views of the eclipse.

The space agency is funding 11 solar eclipse-related science projects across the country.
