LIVE BLOG: Tesla Launches The Model 3

A key government perk for Tesla buyers is running out, says Edmunds

While the rest of the industry chases a release date of 2020/2021, Tesla are delivering now.

ORDERING: People reserving a vehicle now will likely get it in late 2018. That's created a daunting backlog that could take more than a year to fulfill-and that's before Musk took the stage in front of thousands of employees, owners, and reservation-holders to lift the curtain on the company's most monumental achievement yet.

As far as anything more specific, we can guess based on previous information that Tesla has shared.

Tesla has dramatically simplified its manufacturing processes, Musk told reporters before the event on Friday, to where the same factory space where it can build 50,000 Model S sedans or Model X sport utility will be able to produce 200,000 Model 3s. "It's going to be quite a challenge to build this vehicle".

PERFORMANCE: The base model goes from 0-60 miles per hour (96.5 kph) in 5.6 seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph (209 kph).

"The Model 3 will help with the neighborhood effect for electric vehicles", she said. West Coast customers will get their cars first. The standard version is slated for delivery in late 2018 for $35,000, with a more premium version going for $44,000.

Tesla Model 3 is elegant inside and out, and in ways that are hard to appreciate from the photos. The Model 3 will be built with 10,000 unique parts, and its production rate will be dependent on both a global network of components suppliers and Tesla's own battery gigafactory keeping up the pace.

Of course, before you receive your auto, you'll get a chance to make some minor configurations to it online.

McCain calls on both parties to work together
Then a so-called "vote-a-rama" begins, opening the floodgates for all senators to introduce as many amendments as they want. In his remarks Friday, McConnell said it will be "interesting to see what [Democrats] suggest is the way forward".

"We finally have a great, affordable electric auto, and it is absolutely what's needed", Mr. Musk said at a media briefing on Friday.

At the end of the presentation Musk stated that new orders now would likely receive their cars at the end of 2018, indicating that that scale is certainly within their plan. He came with a red Tesla Model 3, driving. But the price can rapidly increase from there. A fully loaded Model 3 with 310 miles of range and Tesla's full semi-autonomous Autopilot system costs a hefty $59,500.

Limits on the $7,500 USA tax credit for electric cars could also hurt demand. About 60 percent of the vehicle comes from the USA, with 30 percent coming from outside North America and 10 percent from Canada and Mexico.

Tesla already sells "S" and "X" model electric cars, but with a starting price of $80,000 they have been seen as wheels for the wealthy. He talked about the future of vehicles and how the Model 3 fits into that framework.

Production is beginning right now, and should ramp up quickly. The vehicle is half steel and half aluminum-steel is easier to work with. The Model 3 can be opened, started and locked using a smartphone or a card that comes with the vehicle.

Tesla's fans are confident. In fact, you can order one here. Take a look at what we already know here, and stay tuned for any breaking news in the near future.

"I believe in the vision Tesla has", said Santucci, who works in digital advertising. Tesla's initial target will be 5,000 units per week.

"A decade ago they were a little more than golf carts".
