The meeting in June a year ago has heightened questions about whether Mr Trump's campaign co-ordinated with the Russian government during the election, which is the focus of federal and congressional investigations. But Trump Jr. has said that the lawyer offered no damaging information on Clinton during the meeting.

Akhmetshin, a registered congressional lobbyist, has in the past also done work on behalf of Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya, who was also present at the June 9 meeting at Trump Tower. He was told the Russian government had information that could "incriminate" Clinton and her dealings with Russia. Matthew Miller, a Justice Department spokesman under President Barack Obama, said the revelations would make it easier for Robert Mueller, the special counsel leading the FBI's investigation into whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation to meddle in the 2016 election, to subpoena someone from outside Trump's orbit "for an independent account" of the meeting.

Mr Trump sought to excuse his "wonderful" son, saying Ms Veselnitskaya was "not a government lawyer" and "it was a meeting that went very, very quickly ... zero happened from the meeting".

Sekulow said the president was not being investigated by Mueller.
