Senate bill sacrifices health care for tax cuts

26 June 2017, 06:54 | Doyle Barker

Price reiterated the argument he has made for months, saying the bills under consideration in Congress are only one part of the GOP's health care plan and that HHS will take action on the administration side to lower premiums - which Heller said the Senate's newly revealed bill will not do. I meant it. There were great things about the House bill, in particular its far-reaching reforms of the Medicaid program.

"I am very supportive of the Senate #Healthcarebill".

Heller said that to win his vote, GOP leaders would have to "protect Medicaid expansion states" from the bill's current cuts.

Both the House and Senate health care bills would disproportionately hurt lower-income households by reducing funding for Medicaid and offering less generous subsidies to buy health insurance. He noted that there "isn't anything in this bill that would lower premiums", and that to say otherwise would be a "lie". "Like in the House bill, older people around 58, 59, 62, who were lower income will certainly wind up paying a lot more for their health insurance if this bill passes in its current form".

In a press conference with Nevada governor Brian Sandoval today, Senator Dean Heller joined his colleague Susan Collins in taking a very negative, and possibly irreconcilable, position on the Senate version of the American Health Care Act.

Four Republicans quickly came out in opposition - Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Ron Johnson and Rand Paul - while at least three more Republicans have openly expressed serious concerns. That group said the legislation did not go far enough in its repeal of Obamacare.

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., said on CBS' Face the Nation that he was undecided on the bill, as did Sen.

The House approved its version of the bill last month.

Dr. Kristyn Brandi, member of Physicians for Reproductive Health and an OB/GYN, says this bill is one of the worst for women in a long time.

Some Republican senators have raised concern about cuts to Medicaid, which provides health care coverage to millions of poor and middle-income Americans.

"I just don't know whether the votes will be there by the end of the week", said Moran, R-Kan., during an interview on "Sunday Morning Futures" with Maria Bartiromo.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell unveiled the bill at a closed-door session with party faithful.

By shifting risk and fiscal responsibility to each state, the Republicans want to change what it means to be one country united in protecting all its citizens from the hard times of ill health. The Senate bill also proposes eliminating many ACA taxes, and the employer penalties associated with the employer and individual mandates would be repealed retroactively, dating to the start of 2016.

Trump has endorsed the bill, and Democrats say they will take every opportunity to link the legislation to an unpopular president. This type of bill affects people's live, it affects everyone that's vulnerable...

"I think the choices are do they want our votes or don't they not want our votes". The CBO announced on Thursday that it will release figures on the Senate plan sometime early next week. So, I'm concerned about proposals the Senate's considering that would cut Medicaid funding.

"It has really become abundantly clear why - exactly why - Senate Republicans have been hiding this Trumpcare plan from patients and families and Democrats, and even from many Republicans", Murray said.

The 142-page Senate health care bill revealed Thursday was written in secret by 13 white men with little or no expertise on health care issues and no advice from doctors, hospitals or health economists, let alone from the public.

However Obama, whose best-known domestic policy achievement stands to crumble, offered a scathing critique of the new bill just hours after its release.
