Governor Rick Scott came to Panama City Beach Monday morning to officially appoint and swear in Jimmy Patronis, Jr.as Florida's new Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
Patronis, who helped his family run a well-known restaurant in Panama City, now sits on the state panel that regulates utilities. "In the state senate, I worked diligently for 10 years to plant the seeds of an innovation economy right here in Florida, and as your next CFO, I want to bring that project to term through continued investment in innovation on every level - from our universities to the labor market".
As the Capitolist reported for weeks, Patronis was Scott's first choice for CFO.
Patronis, a Republican from Panama City, was an early political supporter of Scott in 2010, when the governor was a largely unknown multi-millionaire from Naples who was challenging Republican establishment favorite Bill McCollum in a GOP primary.
Patronis said was honored the governor selected him for the post, and said he has spent his life trying to give back to his community.
Scott will also make announcements in Tampa and Pensacola. The other Cabinet posts are attorney general and agriculture commissioner. It's rare for a sitting governor to have a chance to appoint someone to one of Florida's three elected Cabinet positions.
Other possible names had been floating around to replace Atwater for months, from former Republican Party of Florida chairman and Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry, state Rep. Joe Gruters, Sen. Patronis hasn't indicated if he'll run to keep the job next year.
Democrat Jeremy Ring, a former state senator from Parkland and former executive with the internet firm Yahoo, is the only candidate who has opened a campaign account to run for chief financial officer.
Scott is announcing the appointment at Captain Anderson's, the restaurant run by the Patronis family for 50 years. The position serves as the state's treasurer and oversees various agencies that serve to regulate insurance and financial industries in Florida.
Patronis will be sworn in Friday during a ceremony in Tallahassee. The job pays almost $129,000 a year.
